Microblading and Permanent Makeup in Utah - Be Informed

2/14/2016

Picture
As a licensed Master Aesthetician (for 14 years) and long time permanent makeup professional (13 years), I've always been bothered by the lack of regulation over permanent makeup in Utah.  As Microblading increases in popularity, things are going to get a scary out there.  Here's what you need to know....

In Utah, I need a license to do things like tweeze or wax your eyebrows, apply eyelash extensions, or give you a basic facial.  However, a license is not available of required for those doing microblading or permanent makeup.  Microblading is a form of micropigmentation, aka intradermal pigmentation, aka permanent makeup.  The skin is cut, bleeding occurs, and there is risk.

I recently watched a morning television spot where an artist/trainer repeatedly stated microblading is "completely different" from a tattoo or Softap and that those modalities go "into the muscle".  WHAT?????  YES, microblading IS a tattoo. NO, permanent makeup applied with a digital rotary pen and/or Softap does not go into the muscle.  YES, I have advanced training and experience with Softap, digital rotary pen, and microblading.

In Utah, you (and I mean anyone - with no prior experience) can quite literally attend a one or two day training course taught by anyone and be in business microblading brows.  I've even seen Facebook posts where people are asked where they trained and replied  "I took a class here from a lady".......   Microblading is huge trend and people with no prior experience see it as a way to make money.   Training classes are filled to capacity and all these ladies - lots of them - will soon be "practicing"......

The burden of regulation falls upon the County Health Department who should be inspecting each facility and assessing each practitioner before issuing a permit.  Permanent makeup in Utah falls under the "body art establishment" permit requirements.  However, there are many people doing microblading and permanent makeup without these permits, because they fail to apply for legitimate business licenses and to apply for a board of health permit.

So what can you do to protect your health and to increase the likelihood of a good result?  Before you agree to any microblading or permanent makeup procedure, ask your artist these questions:
  • Does she have a current business license in the city where she is doing business - it should be posted on the wall.  If you don't see it, ask.
  • Does she have a current Board of Health permit - it is required to be posted on the wall.  If you don't see it - RUN.
  • Does she have a current Bloodborne Pathogens certification - not required, but it it should be.  This should be renewed annually.
  • Bonus points - Is she a licensed aesthetician or cosmetologist, meaning that at some point, she received in-depth training about skin and its structure.  Again, this is (unfortunately) not required in the state of Utah.
  • Does she have current professional liability insurance?  This costs several hundreds dollars per year and reputable insurance companies usually require proof of training from a school.  Most microblading and permanent makeup artists don't carry insurance due to these two factors.  Again, RUN.
  • If you are receiving only microblading, does she have any prior permanent makeup experience?
  • Who trained her? Was it a legitimate company? For how many days?
  • When was she trained?
  • Has she taken a color theory course?
  • If she is only microblading, does she have any other permanent makeup experience?
  • Did she give you a list of pre-treatment instructions?
  • Did she ask about potential medical contraindications when you booked your appointment?
  • Does she have photos of her work?
  • Are there client reviews you can read?
  • Does she have her Hepatitis B vaccination series? Not required - but a professional in this business should have it.

During your treatment:
  • Was the studio clean?
  • Was everything explained to you thoroughly?
  • Was sterile, single use equipment used? Do you see a sharps container and did you watch your needle go into it?  I've watched permanent makeup "professionals" throw used, contaminated needles into the trash......
  • If she touched anything (doorknobs, cell phone, etc) did she re-glove before touching your open skin?
  • Is the tray she is working from covered in barrier film?
  • Did she give you aftercare instructions to mitigate the risk of infection and increase the likelihood of a beautiful outcome?
  • Is she readily available if you have questions or concerns after?

It's your beautiful face.  Be extremely picky.  Because someone charges a lot, has a huge Instagram following, trains others, has a huge waiting list, etc. doesn't necessarily make them knowledgeable and proficient about the risks and responsibilities that accompany entering the sterile layer of your skin with needles....

Permanent makeup is absolutely fabulous and those who have it (including me) love it.  And microblading has increased the awareness of permanent and semi-permanent makeup due to its beautiful, natural results.  There are many qualified, exceptional microblading and permanent makeup artists out there.  It's ok to protect your health and your result by asking lots of questions to ensure you pick the best match for you.

Microblading.......

Microblading/Hairstroke Brows/3D Brows
No matter what you call them, they are beautiful and I'm so excited to offer this treatment.  After months of training, practice, and working with some open-minded training models, I'm ready to offer you a brow service you're going to love.  Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup treatment this is perfect for so many clients.  Clients with little or no brow hair will be able to have thicker, natural-looking brows.  Clients with brows that are loosing length at the ends can have them lengthened.  Clients with great brows will be able to loose their brow pencil and forego brow tinting.  And, because no one has perfect brows, microblading allows for small imperfections to be addressed, creating symmetry, fullness, and depth of color.   Your brows are your most significant facial feature.  Small brow changes can make a HUGE difference.  Correctly shaped brows can lift the face, widen and brighten the eyes, and emphasize all your beautiful facial features.  Are you ready to ditch your brow pencil and love your brows???
Here are some commonly asked microblading questions......

What is Microblading?
Microblading is a hand-applied, semi-permanent, cosmetic eyebrow enhancement where a small amount of high quality, cosmetic grade pigment is deposited into the superficial layers of skin.

How long does it last?
Microblading is semi-permanent.  How you care for your brows will affect the life of your enhancement, and you will be given aftercare instructions after your treatment.  Microblade enhancements usually last approximately 1-2 years.

Is it painful?
There is minimal discomfort associated with the treatment. However, topical anesthetics are used to numb the area.

What should I do to prepare for my procedure?
Visit the Before Your Permanent Makeup page on my website. Microblading is less invasive than other permanent cosmetics, but please still discontinue use of products that might thin your blood.  Otherwise, preparation is quite simple.  If you refrain from tweezing or waxing your eyebrows for a week or two before you come in, I'll be able to best assess your natural brow shape (and I'll "clean your brows up" when you come in).

What’s the process like?
At your first treatment, you'll complete consent forms and I'll take before photos and shape your brows.  I'll apply a topical anesthetic and while your skin numbs, we'll decide on color.  After that, you'll relax while I create your beautiful brows.

How long does it take?
The procedure takes approximately 2 hours.  Remember, each set of brows is a work of art - carefully created to enhance your beautiful facial features.

What should I do after the procedure?
You will be given complete aftercare instructions.  Really, you'll just need to keep them clean, dry, covered in ointment, and out of the sun.

When may I return to social activities/work?
There’s no downtime associated with this treatment. Redness and swelling usually dissipate within an hour. Your brows will appear darker initially, but not so dark that you will be prevented from your activities of daily living.

How long does it take to heal?
Healing time varies from individual to individual. Usually, it takes about a week to ten days for the epithelial crust to form and slough off. Your skin will be considered healed after that happens. Then, the pigment takes some time to settle into the skin before the final color can be assessed.

What can’t I do after the procedure?
It is recommended you keep the skin clean and dry - which means no swimming, sweating or otherwise getting the area wet; no tanning or prolonged sun exposure; no picking or peeling the treated area.

How long have you been doing this?
I've been doing Softap (hand applied permanent makeup) for 13 years.  Microblading is a newer modality that is very similar to Softap in its application.

Will I love my brows?
I hope so!!  Not having to grab your eyebrow pencil every day and waking up with lovely brows will make your daily routine so much easier.  If changes need to be made after the initial treatment, eyebrows can be modified to some extent.  I strive to ensure we are both happy with shape and color before we even begin.

GOT ACNE??  Skin Spa Can Help

1/18/2016

Helping my clients to clear their acne is one of the most enjoyable things I get to do.  Clearing acne can be life changing for people.  I have clients who now go without makeup when they never could in the past, clients who were once reluctant to enjoy time out socially, and those who just feel better day to day because their acne is clear.  My acne clients range from 12 years old to over 50.  I am one of only four aestheticians in the entire state of Utah certified to offer the acne program I have, and Skin Spa's Acne Bootcamp is incredibly effective at getting you clear.  Here are some frequently asked questions......

What is Skin Spa's Acne Bootcamp?
It's a comprehensive program where you learn to care for your skin, attend regular in-office therapeutic acne treatments, and use effective home care products to quickly clear your acne and keep you clear.

How successful is it?
Clients who come to their regular appointments and diligently use their home care products achieve clear skin and remain clear 95% of the time.

Why is it different from other acne products and programs?
Skin Spa's Acne Bootcamp is one the most integrated acne programs available.  During your consultation, you'll learn about a number of factors that can exacerbate acne - including lifestyle, nutrition, drugs, and product choices.  Every product is genuinely non-pore clogging in nature.  I know - lots of products say that, but these actually ARE non-pore clogging.  (By the way - Did you know Cetaphil, which is commonly recommended by dermatologists, has pore clogging ingredients?)

What support will I have to be successful?
You will be given a myriad of resources when you start the program so you can adjust lifestyle, nutrition, and product usage.  You'll come in for regular appointments and we'll chat each time about your progress.  As your skin needs a change in products or treatment protocol, I'll guide you through that.  Getting and keeping you clear is your biggest goal - and it's mine as well.

How is Skin Spa different from other clinics?
Skin Spa is the only clinic in Utah to offer comprehensive  acne care.  We are the only clinic to carry an entire line of acne-safe makeup and I can custom blend a foundation especially for your skin.  I also carry supplements and vegan protein powder to help with dietary needs.  Skin Spa offers high frequency and LED light therapy for acne care and microneedling to treat acne scars.  I also have a colleague in my office who is a nurse practitioner you may see for hormone therapy and other health-related issues.

What about my acne scars?
As your acne clears, your regular treatments and home care will be helping to reduce scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots, red scarring).  Those who have pitted scars will be amazed at how effective a series of microneedling can be.

How long will it take to get clear?
You will start seeing results within the first few weeks.  Significant clearing usually takes about 3 months for those that come to all appointments, are diligent with prescribed home care, and avoid other makeup and products containing pore clogging ingredients.

Will I stay clear?
Yes. My goal is not only to get you clear, but to keep you clear.  In office appointments will be reduced as your skin clears, with a goal of keeping you clear with continued home care use.

Why shouldn't I just take Accutane or other medications?
Accutane and other oral medications typically prescribed for acne can help you achieve clear skin, but can come with a long list of dangerous side effects.  In fact, the side effects of Accutane can last for years.  Often times, once medications are stopped, acne comes back and other medications are prescribed.  Why not spend the time to learn what actually causes your acne and how to care for your skin have a lifetime of clear skin?

How much will I spend on treatment?
Each treatment is $75.  Discounted packages are available when 3 or more treatments are purchased at one time.  The first set of acne home care products averages $140.  These products last about 3 months.  Depending on your insurance plan, Skin Spa's program and products may be comparable to co-pays, deductibles, and prescription costs you would incur by seeing a dermatologist.

Does Skin Spa take HSA plan cards?
Some clients HSA cards have been accepted, and some have been declined.  It just depends on your insurance. Please realize, though, that I'm an aesthetician and not a physician.

Still have more questions?
You can come in for an acne consultation.  This is a 45 minute appointment to fully asses your skin and provide information about the type of acne you have, the causes, and how we can treat it.  The cost is $50.  However, if you have you first acne peel at the same time, the cost of the consultation is reduced to only $10.

Microneedling - Frequently Asked Questions

1/6/2016

Micro needling is one of Skin Spa's most popular services, yielding exceptional results with minimal downtime and cost.  Curious about it?  Here's a list of frequently asked questions.

What is microneedling?
It's a simple, minimally invasive treatment beneficial for most skin types.  It breaks down scar tissue, naturally stimulates collagen production, and improves the texture and tone of the skin.

How does microneedling work?
There are many different microneedling devices on the market. At Skin Spa, I proudly use the Eclipse MicroPen.  I believe it to be far superior to other devices available.   This pen received the 2016 Aesthetic Industry Award for Best Microneedling Device.  Tiny needles from the device penetrate the skin and create thousands of micro-injuries.  The body responds to this controlled wounding by producing collagen and elastin, which rejuvenates the face and fills scars and wrinkles.

What will I look like after the treatment?
Immediately after, your skin will be red and look like you have a mild sunburn.  This dissipates over several hours.  Makeup (I always recommend a high-quality mineral makeup) can be worn the next day.

Does it hurt?
I use a very effective topical anesthetic to numb the skin, making the treatment very comfortable.  Some clients have slightly more sensitivity on the forehead and lips.

Can areas other that the face be treated?
Yes.  Many clients choose to treat the face and "add on" abdominal stretch marks, neck, hands, and surgical/injury/trauma scars on the body.  Please see the microneedling page for add-on pricing.

What skin concerns can be treated with microneedling?
Microneedling is extremely effective for treating: acne scars, trauma/surgical scars, fine lines, deeper wrinkles, skin laxity, sagging skin, rough skin texture, alopecia, sun damage, pore size, stretch marks.

How many treatments will I need?
You will see results with the first treatment, with cumulative results over time.  Most people need a series of 3-6 treatments, and then choose to do occasional maintenance treatments.

How often should I have treatments?
That depends on what we're treating.  The initial series will consist of treatment done about every 4 weeks.

Why should I consider microneedling over a laser treatment?
The results of microneedling, especially considering the cost, are incredible.  Lasers are contraindicated for many skin tones and skin types, and come with a significant risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  Laser treatments, if done correctly, usually lead to a great deal of swelling and downtime.  Microneedling results are similar to fractionated laser treatments without the significant inflammatory response, discomfort, downtime, and risk.

How much is it?
In Utah, microneedling with a quality micropen in a reputable facility with an experienced practitiomer usually ranges between $250-$400.  Skin Spa's individual treatments are affordable and competitively priced.  In addition, you can purchase a small package of 3 for a discounted price, and a package of 6 for more significant savings.

Why choose Skin Spa?
I've been microneedling longer than most practitioners in Utah.  I've received advanced microneedling training to ensure my procedures yield optimal outcomes and results.  I use an award winning device to achieve exceptional results.  And, at Skin Spa, the combination of pre and post treatment protocols and serum blends are exclusive to my practice and not available anywhere else.

I Hate the "Blackheads"/Pores on My Nose

2/22/2015

Picture
I am asked on a daily basis what can be done to get rid of "blackheads" or "large pores" on the nose.  Many of my clients, not just those being treated for acne, are concerned about this issue.  If you look at the picture above, most of what you see are not blackheads at all.  They are sebaceous filaments, also known as oil glands or just normal pores. Unless your skin is very dry, you will have sebaceous filaments on the nose, under the lip on the chin, and possibly on the cheeks near the nose.

These oils glands/pores are healthy and meant to be there.  Even if they are "extracted", they will soon fill and be visible within days of extracting.

The photo above shows a Face Reality client who actually does have blackheads and a few milia between the healthy sebaceous filaments.  Actual blackheads and milia can be extracted during your in-clinic treatment.  To ensure they don't reappear, you'll be given products to help keep your pores clear and ensure blackheads and milia don't return.  You'll want to make sure everything you place on your skin, including foundation and other makeup, don't contain pore clogging ingredients.

The best way to tell if your "blackheads" are actually blackheads is just to look.  Are they the same size as the other "blackheads" on your nose or chin area?  If they are, then they're sebaceous filaments.

Unless you have very oil-dry skin, you and everyone else has sebaceous filaments/pores.  When standing a couple of feet away from others, you can't even see the pores on the nose.

Unfortunately, many pictures we see in magazines are photo-shopped and airbrushed.  We've become so accustomed to seeing these that we don't have realistic expectations of what is healthily, normal, and truly beautiful.  Learn to love the pores on your nose.  They help to keep that beautiful face healthy.

What Makes Skin Spa's Acne Treatment Different?

Acne can be so frustrating.  80% of us have struggled with it.  It's not just a teenage problem.  It affects all ages - from those as young as 8 to adults over 60.

When you have acne, it seems like the quest for clear, flawless skin never ends.  Many people try every solution possible - from drug store treatments and info-mercial options to prescription drugs.

Skin Spa Acne Clinic offers a highly successful acne treatment program with a proven 95% clear rate.  What makes it different than everything else you've tried?

Picture
Professional Guidance -
At Skin Spa Acne Clinic, I work closely with you one-on-one to help you to understand what's causing your acne.  When you visit a dermatologist, they often have several patients to see each hour.  You generally receive a brief office visit and often leave a prescription and instructions to follow up in a month or two.  At Skin Spa, your first visit is a full hour consultation and treatment.  We discuss together what causes acne and things you can do every day to clear your skin.

The Right In-Clinic Treatment -
At the beginning of each visit, I carefully assess your skin and check your progress.  I then determine the appropriate treatment for your skin.  Treatments include a combination of chemical peels or enzymes, extractions, high frequency treatments, LED light treatments, and whatever else your skin needs that day.  Each time you come in, you can expect your treatment to be a little different - because it's always tailored to how your skin is doing when I see you.  If you are struggling with your program, we'll chat together about what might be causing that, so you can continue to clear.

The Right Home Care -
Purchasing the right products is so important.  But having someone teach you how to use your products properly is key to the success of your treatment.  You will learn how to slowly use high performance products to treat your acne, allowing your skin to acclimate to them without dryness or irritation.  We will then adjust your personalized regimen slowly to clear your acne.  I even carry an entire line of acne-safe makeup, as well as acne-safe shaving products and shampoo so as we're getting you clear, things like make-up and shaving cream aren't exacerbating the problem.

Continued Support…….
Once you are clear (usually in 3-4 months), I'll give you the information and resources to help keep you clear.  It is possible for you to have healthy, flawless, clear skin for life.  It's so worth the investment to learn how to care for your skin without harmful prescriptions from a professional who cares about your skin as much as you do.

…..From a Professional with Years of Experience -
I've been treating skin since 2001.  I've treated hundreds of clients and have countless hours of continuing education in advanced aesthetic procedures.  I've worked for a plastic surgeon and medical spa for 9 years.  I have so much experience to draw from.  But most importantly, I am committed to helping every client achieve healthy, luminous skin and have a great experience every time they visit my practice.

Call Skin Spa Acne Clinic and let me help you to clear your acne.  (801) 792-7994

Why Do You Need a Chemical Peel?

1/28/2015

Picture
Chemical peels are one of my favorite treatments and with good reason.  Done correctly, incredible results can be achieved with a series of peels and noticeable results will be seen after just one treatment.

There are many misconceptions about peels.  When most people think of chemical peels, they associate them with considerable discomfort, down time, and lots of shedding skin.  That isn't necessarily the case.  At Skin Spa, I offer peel options ranging from mild enzymes that gently exfoliate the skin to deep TCA peels that cause significant skin shedding and rejuvenation.  Peel options are available for every skin tone, texture, and type - even those with sensitive skin and rosacea.

So what will a chemical peel do for your skin?  Peels treat a myriad of skin concerns including:
  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation ("age spots")
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (redness left by scarring)
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Mild acne scarring
Peels help to reduce pore congestion, increase cell turnover, help your skin naturally produce more collagen, improve the skin's ability to hold moisture, and make your skinglow.

So why should you choose Skin Spa for your next chemical peel?  I spend hours each year continuing my education in my field.  (This is not required of aestheticians in Utah - but I do it anyway).  Many of those hours are spent increasing my knowledge with advanced skin practices like chemical peeling.  I have chosen to work with Lira Clinical chemical peels.  Lira peel solutions allow me to provide exceptional results for my clients.  Lira peels are blended with plant-derived stem cell technology, multiple peptide chains, potent antioxidants, and healing minerals.

Would you love to try one?  Call me at (801) 792-7994 or book online at www.styleseat.com/skinspa.

Winter Skin Care

1/11/2015

Picture
Baby it's cold outside!  As temperatures decline, so does that the moisture level of your skin.  The significant temperature variance between indoors and outdoors can increase skin's sensitivity, especially for those with rosacea or acne.  Environmental humidity in the winter decreases, resulting in dry skin.  What can you do to help combat winter skin woes?  Here are a few tips…

1.  Add a little moisture - As weather conditions change, you may need to change your moisturizer.  Most of us need to switch to something more emollient in the winter.  Make sure you're choosing a high quality moisturizer that is free of pore clogging ingredients, especially if you're acne prone.  Lira's Bio Caviar Creme is a rich, emollient moisturizer with caviar, colloidal silver and gold, vitamin C and plant stem cells.

2. Exfoliate - If you have excessive dry, dead skin cells, moisturizers and serums you apply can't do their job.  Don't choose apricot scrubs or other harsh exfoliates, which can cause micro-tears in the skin and break down the skin's barrier.  Instead, choose a good retinol serum or creme, like Lira's Pro C4 Retinol Serum or Pro Retinol Creme.  Both of these products dramatically improve skin texture by eliminating dead skin cells.

3. Inside out - Good nutrition and hydration always matter, but that's especially true in winter.  Often my clients with dry skin drink very little water.  Your minimum water intake each day should be half your body weight in ounces.  So, if you weigh 150 lbs, your minimum water consumption should be 75 ounces.  Water intake should be increased if you consume caffeine, soda, or excessive salt.  Increasing water intake will also help with weight loss.  Add a little lemon juice and you're detoxing as well!

4.  Sunscreen - Every. Single. Day.  If you see me in clinic, I always ask you if you're wearing it because it's so important.  Sun exposure and smoking are the two things that contribute to skin aging more than any other factors.  In the winter, snow significantly increases UV exposure.  I absolutely love Lira's Oil Free SPF 30.  It has fabulous UVA/UVB protection and is packed with skin loving ingredients like plant stem cells and vitamin C.

5.  Don't forget your hands - They need the same care as the skin on your face.  Hands easily show signs of dryness and aging.  Gently exfoliate the hands, and always follow with moisturizer.  Wearing gloves does't just keep your hands warm - gloves also prevent moisture loss.  And next time you're in for a facial, consider a hand treatment add-on and we'll start banishing those pesky dark spots that start to pop up as we age.

6.  Minimize hot showers and baths - Nice, hot baths feel wonderful,  but they can break down the lipid barriers in skin and lead to dryness.  Try to stick to warm baths, and toss in some baking soda and oatmeal to relieve dry, itchy skin.

7.  And after your bathe or shower - Moisturize that whole body.  I'm not a fan of drug store products for the face, but one of my favorite body moisturizers is available from the drugstore and it's called Amlactin.  It's a lactic acid moisture than gently removes dead skin cells while moisturizing.

8.  A little spritz - If you're feeling dry mid-day, spritz on Lira's Hydrating Mineral Mist.  It will instantly balance, refresh, and hydrate skin in one mist.  I keep one in my purse.

9.  Consider a professional treatment - There are many treatments available in clinic to eliminate dry winter skin.  Treatments can be done in as little as 30 minutes and make a significant difference in how your skin will look and feel during the coming months.  Winter is also a great time to begin a peel series.  Come in and we can discuss the perfect, personalized solution for you.  You can even book your appointment online.

Nine Reasons to Choose Microneedling at Skin Spa

1/3/2015

Are you're wanting younger, healthier looking skin without having to experience the risks and downtime of surgery or laser treatments, Skin Spa's Eclipse Micropen is the perfect solution.  The Eclipse Micropen stimulates the skin's natural healing process to increase elasticity, reduce the appearance of scars and wrinkles, minimize pores, and make the skin more luminous and resilient.   A versatile treatment that corrects a variety of skin concerns, microneedling  is an attractive option for men and women seeking comprehensive skin rejuvenation without invasive surgery or laser treatments.  So why choose microneedling and why choose Skin Spa?

1. Minimal downtime - Microneelding with the Eclipse Micropen will produce noticeable results in just one treatment with little downtime.  Following treatment, your skin will appear flushed and red - much like a mild sunburn.  This begins to diminish within a a few hours and can be completely covered with Skin Spa's custom-blended mineral makeup the next day.

2.  Convenience - Microneedling is the fastest and most convenient treatment for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks.  The treatment takes only a hour.

3.  Comfort - prior to microneedling, a topical anesthetic will be applied to make the procedure very comfortable.  You will experience little to no discomfort.

4. Balanced cell function - the ideal skin rejuvenation treatment needs to target three key cells - the keratinocyte, the melanocyte, and the fibroblast.  Microneedling is the ONLY treatment that targets and maintains integrity of all three main cell types.

5.  Experience - I was one of the first practitioners in Utah to offer DermaPen, which was one of the original mircopens.  I've been doing microneedling since 2011 - longer than many other partitioners, and I've been and aesthetician and permanent markup artist for 14 years.

6.  We use Eclipse - At Skin Spa, I've chosen to use the Eclipse Micropen.  I find it to be far superior to other microneedling devices.

7.  Affordable - Skin Spa offers microneedling at a price that is far less than many other practices in Utah.  We also offer package pricing when multiple treatments are purchased together.

8.  Safe - many other treatments, including laser, are destructive in nature.  Microneedling is safe, non-ablative, and encourages regenerative healing of the skin.

9. Exclusive Skin Spa protocol - Skin Spa is the only skin care clinic where your micro needling will include out exclusive hyaluronic, VitaBrite, vitamin C infusion.  In addition to all the other benefits of mirconeedling, this protocol results in unsurpassed lightening, brightening, and tightening with each treatment.

If you're ready for more luminous, younger looking skin with natural looking results, call Skin Spa to find out more about Eclipse Micropen microneedling.

LED Facials - Now available at Skin Spa

WHAT ARE LED FACIALS?
Every day, we read about the newest, fastest ways to eradicate fine lines, cellulite, acne, and hyperpigmentaion. It can all become a little overwhelming – and let’s be honest -  with all the “buzz” and need for instant gratification, do we really know what we’re getting into? One thing is certain: there is a growing demand for new non-surgical procedures that can be done with no downtime, no tissue damage, and no negative side effects. Light Emitting Diodes (LED) is one such treatment that is becoming more popular - and now it's available at Skin Spa.  A huge benefit of LED is that a wide range of skin types can be treated very safely and effectively. Due to the low-intensity light source, there is no thermal damage to the skin, and no post inflammatory hyperpigmentaion is possible. After a clinical LED session, skin is more luminous, more even, and much more clear. As technology in non-ablative therapies continue to evolve and grow in popularity, LED facials have become the go-to, gentler approach for treating anything from acne to dry skin, to wrinkles, rosacea or just a quick “pick me up.”  And it's incredibly effective.

HOW DOES LED WORK?
LED is very different from lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).  IPL relies on thermal (heat) injury to the skin’s collagen, water or blood vessels to create changes in the skin’s appearance. Not only is IPL contraindicated for many skin types, skin tones, and skin conditions - there is always associated risk of burning, scarring, and downtime with IPL.

LED employs NASA® developed light therapy technology, which is a non-invasive, low-level, non-thermal light energy that activates skin cells. The device employs wavelength at optimal power intensity that is medically proven and FDA cleared to be effective in addressing skin problems associated with aging, sun damage, and acne.  The process by which light is emitted by the LED’s is similar to that of photosynthesis in plants. Simply put, LED light gets converted into energy, or more specifically, “ATP” (Adenosine Triphosphate). This is the form of energy that cells use to power the metabolic processes needed to repair or regenerate cell and tissue components and restore balance. Different wavelengths (colors) of the visible light spectrum act on different mechanisms within individual cells: red to promote collagen growth; and violet-blue to help kill acne-causing bacteria. The chosen colors are one of the most important points. Depth of penetration is dependant on the wavelengths (nm), which has a direct bearing on the results achieved.

At Skin Spa, we use the Celluma panel, and at this time, we are the exclusive provider of Celluma LED facials in Utah.  It effectively treats acne, aging skin, and areas of the body where there is pain using specialized, clinical settings.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE AT-HOME LED DEVICES, LIKE PULSADERM LED
The clinical settings with the Celluma treatment will always provide the fastest, most effective results.  However, our clients who use LED devices at home experience exceptional results.  Skin Spa is the exclusive Utah provider of Pulsaderm LED light therapy.  Pulsaderm is FDA cleared and provides light waves designed to penetrate deep into the skin to earse the appearance of aging skin, fine lines, wrinkles, crow's feet, and hyperpigmentation (brown/age spots), as well as improve skin texture.  It is also highly effective for treating acne.  The energy delivered by LEDs enhances cellular metabolism, accelerates the repair and replenishment of damaged skin celles, and stimulates the production of structural proteins.  Maintaining beautiful, healthy  skin between Celluma LED facial treatments can easily be done in your own home with our Pulsaderm handheld system.

ARE LEDs BETTER THAN LASERS?
Although results are not as dramatic as those with aggressive ablative treatments, LED treatments are very effective when used correctly. It is vital that the correct treatment or wavelength is chosen for your skin type and condition. Using the wrong formulation is ineffective at best and, under some conditions when adding products to the mix, worsens the problem. Even the simplest cosmetic skin care products have an appreciable influence on the physiological skin processes. This is why for optimal results, I recommend a complete skin diagnosis and a treatment plan with a licensed aesthetician (me!!).

HOW DOES A LED FACIAL FEEL LIKE AND HOW MUCH IS AN LED FACIAL?
We begin with a customized aromatherapy facial using modalities that your skin needs that day.  After the hands on portion of the facial, you relax under the LED panel for 30 minutes.   Most clients feel very little during this part of the treatment.  LED facials at Skin Spa are 90 minute treatments and cost $90

CAN LED BE ADDED ON TO OTHER SKIN SPA TREATMENTS?
Yes.  LED would significantly increase results for clients who are currently having micro-needling (DermaPen), acne treatments, microdermabrasion, peels or enzymes.  The add on cost to accompany any facial treatment is only $29.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"It's hard to even put into words the experience I recently had with Kimberlee.  Two years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had bilateral mastectomy.  By her amazing talent and work, I can feel whole again.  She tattooed 3D areola and nipples on me and she did a beautiful job.  She is kind, compassionate, and caring.  She several times cried with me and I know she felt just as much joy as I did when she was done.  I felt very calm in her office and I was able to relax and feel peace.  I would highly recommend her to anyone."
